“NURSING EXCELLENCE IS THE ABILITY TO COMBINE CLINICAL EXPERTISE, CRITICAL THINKING, COST EFFECTIVENESS, A COLLABORATIVE SPIRIT AND DRIVE FOR PERFECTION INTO DAILY PRACTICE. AT HOI, THE ICING ON THE CAKE IS COMBINING THESE ATTRIBUTES AND GIVING FROM THE HEART. THE EXCELLENCE, AT LEAST TO THE PATIENT AND CAREGIVER, IS PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH THE STAFF. THAT IS MAGIC.”

RESEARCH AND EDUCATION CONTINUED
ANNUAL NURSING SYMPOSIUM
On October 28, 2013, at HOI’s 5th Annual Orthopedic Nursing Symposium, orthopedic experts shared the most current information
in musculoskeletal issues with more than 125 participants from throughout the Western United States. We welcomed orthopedic nurses, certified nursing assistants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation staff, orthopedic technicians/cast technicians, peri- operative staff and other clinicians working
in orthopedic settings. All came interested to learn about multi-modal anesthesia; views from the patient’s perspective on patella fractures; and knee revision surgery along with live-feed from the operating room, demonstrating a total knee revision surgery. Also on the agenda were the goals and outcomes of knee replacement surgery, nursing considerations for post-op spine patients, venous thrombosis (VTE) prophylaxis standardization and cervical spine discectomy.
The annual symposium offers specialty continuing education credit that supports the Orthopedic Nurse Certification Board. In 2013 it was co- sponsored by the Orange County Chapter of
the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses (NAON).
CLINICAL LEARNING FOR HOI NURSING STAFF
HOI sent five orthopedic nurses to an international conference held at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. This symposium hosted physicians and mid-level
practitioners from around the world to share cadaver time, learn new surgical techniques and challenge one another with case studies and grueling didactic courses.
The Pain Assessment and Management Conference sponsored by HOI featured
Pain Management expert Chris Pasero, MS, RN-BC, FAAN. The event was held in the
Hoag Hospital Irvine Auditorium and was attended by 76 registered nurses. Topics included: pain assessment, principles of pain management, pharmacologic approaches,
and nonpharmacologic approaches to pain.
The response from the participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many participants commented how the concepts presented would impact their practice and that their knowledge base in pain management grew tremendously due to this conference.
