CONDUCT MEANINGFUL RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND CUTTING EDGE CLINICAL CARE IN ORTHOPEDICS TO IMPROVE HEALTH AND QUALITY OF LIFE OF OUR PATIENTS WHILE DISSEMINATING OUR FINDINGS AND KNOWLEDGE TO OTHER HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS TO BENEFIT ALL PATIENTS.
OERI MISSION STATEMENT
to step up to fill this void. And, we need to grow from within. Specialists in training from Orange County and those coming here to be well trained will, in many cases, choose to stay in the area.
Dr. Patzakis: We’re providing opportunities to learn from the best. Fellows (physicians who have completed five years of training in a sub-specialty and opt for further clinical training focused on a specific area of his or her sub-specialty) will be working with multiple faculty members achieving superb outcomes at California’s largest volume provider of orthopedic care.
Talk about OERI’s fellowship training. Dr. Prietto: The Orthopedic Education and
Research Institute’s renowned medical director, Dr. Patzakis, brings us 43 years of academic orthopedic surgery experience and a legacy of landmark advances in orthopedics. Because
of him, hundreds of surgeons have honed their skills and gone on to distinguish themselves
in orthopedic subspecialty work around the country. Under his direction, backed by the full support of HOI, we can look forward to great gains in orthopedic and surgical expertise that will ultimately benefit thousands of patients locally and millions of patients globally.
Dr. Patzakis: In 2013, we continue to expand our fellowship program that began in 2012. In 2013,
a one-year Total Joint Arthroplasty Program Clinical Fellowship was the first to be completed at HOI. We currently have one Total Joint Program Research Fellowship, with a second planned for 2014. We have geared up for clinical fellowships
in our Total Joint Arthroplasty Program starting in 2014, which will be followed by clinical and research fellowships in our Sports Medicine and Spine Programs in 2015. Beyond that,
we see potential for other orthopedic sub- specialty fellowships.
What is your vision for clinical research
and education?
Dr. Prietto: In the past, subspecialty doctors have often worked in silos. My vision is that through OERI, we as physicians are branches of a tree that can be nourished from the tree trunk, connected by common goals directed toward improving patient care.
Along with robust orthopedic physician education, OERI supports HOI in offering leading edge continuing education conferences for nurses and ancillary medical personnel; and ongoing classes provided for the community-at-large.
Dr. Patzakis: By doing meaningful clinical research using HOI’s outcomes, we educate other physicians and providers on how to achieve the excellent results we have. This past year’s inaugural fellowship research culminated in five abstracts accepted for presentation and publication.
