SURGICAL CARE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT (SCIP)
The Surgical Care Improvement Project is a national quality partnership of organizations interested in improving surgical care. This partnership includes the steering committee
of 10 national organizations, including the Joint Commission and Center of Medicare
and Medicaid Services (CMS), dedicated to saving lives and improving surgical care by significantly reducing surgical complications. SCIP measurements reflect proven best practices and are a major focus of HOI’s quality initiatives.
Studies have demonstrated that the risk of infection increases progressively with greater time intervals between antibiotic administration and skin incision.

This measure of optimal care uses the “all-or-none” methodology to determine if a patient received all of the recommended treatment for which they were eligible. It helps ensure the right care, for every person, every time.
