READMISSION RATE
Readmissions are often traumatic and disabling experiences for patients, as well as expensive. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) reports that readmissions cost the Medicare program $17.5 billion in inpatient spending, with nearly one in five Medicare patients returning to the hospital within a month of discharge for all types of hospitalizations.
Readmission within 30 days can be greatly influenced by hospital care and the initial transition to outpatient care. CMS has targeted readmission rates as a way to reduce the increasing cost
of medical care. In September 2012, CMS announced three new outcomes measures in its Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) program. CMS plans to report data for the following measures on the Hospital Compare website in 2013:
• Hospital-Wide All-Cause Unplanned
Readmission Measure (HWR)
• Hospital-Level 30-Day All-Cause Risk-
Standardized Readmission Rate Following Elective Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) and/or Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) – THA/TKA Readmission
• Hospital-Level Risk-Standardized Complication Rate Following Elective Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty and/or Total Knee Arthroplasty
Hoag Orthopedic Institute has achieved readmission rates significantly below the national and regional averages.
